Dementia residents enjoy nostalgic Armed Forces Day

Residents at our Avalon Nursing Home in Bridgwater were recently treated to a special Armed Forces Day courtesy of the British Legion. Along with their family and friends, residents spent the day swapping wartime stories and memories and even posed for photos in a wartime ambulance brought in for the occasion.

Residents also enjoyed a BBQ and raffle and had the opportunity to try on props, whilst listening to popular war-time music from the 1940s.

Madi Davis, Activities Co-ordinator at Avalon Nursing Home, said: “We wanted to host an Armed Forces Day because we know many of our residents have personal experiences of World War Two, whether they were a child at the time, or they had family members who fought in the war.

“This type of event gives our residents the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities with their loved ones and can help support their wellbeing.

“I know that our staff were really moved to hear some of the personal experiences and everyone enjoyed getting dressed up in the props, especially the hats, and residents loved having the opportunity to have their photo taken in the ambulance.”
