Butterfly Lodge

You are here: Home1 / Our Homes2 / Butterfly Lodge

Places at Butterfly Lodge are highly sought-after by families in Plymouth where it is recognised as being one of the leading specialist dementia nursing homes in the city.

We provide a safe, compassionate home where those living with dementia feel valued, understood and supported, guided by kindness, dignity and teamwork. We care with heart every moment of every day.

Our reputation and the feedback from health professionals and family members reinforce what a good job we do, and our staff turnaround is low, with many staff having worked with us for a long time.

At the ‘Celebrating Excellence in Care Awards’ organised annually by Plymouth City Council, the home has scooped multiple awards including – in 2024 and 2025 alone – Excellence in Dementia Care, Manager and Deputy Manager of the Year, the People’s Choice Award, Culinary Team of the Year and Team of the Year Award.

Butterfly Lodge is also accredited with St Luke’s Six Steps for Quality End of Life, with 2025 marking the fourth consecutive time the home was recognised for the excellent way the charity’s focused Six Steps+ end-of-life care programme is implemented here.

Team members are involved with local research projects to ensure they remain at the forefront of giving best practice, including initiatives with the University of Plymouth.

Accommodation & Facilities

Butterfly Lodge is a purpose-built, Swedish-designed residential home which occupies a beautiful location overlooking the Tamar Estuary.

Layout: Set over two floors, the home has excellent sound and thermal insulation qualities making it peaceful and cosy, while its carefully considered layout provides ample areas for residents to relax and spend their time.

Grounds: Access to the garden and summer house is provided via a large terrace with raised flower beds that doubles as an area for various gardening projects, including a potting area and an accessible area where residents love growing their own vegetables.

We have ample parking for visitors.

Lounge and dining room: The Tamar Lounge gives on to a generous conservatory provide a social hub in the centre of the home, there is a second smaller lounge if residents wish to sit quietly. The two spacious dining rooms are accessed via wide corridors.

Bedrooms: Our 36 single bedrooms and one double bedroom all have ensuite wet rooms. Each room has its own TV and telephone point.

Treatments: We have an in-house hair salon and a treatment room for to cater for residents’ beauty, grooming and therapeutic needs, with a qualified hairdresser available, and other therapists visiting as required.

Activities: Butterfly Lodge has a fantastic activities team, with four staff members and a volunteer supporter, who all offer different specialisms: great music from the winner of Germany’s Got Talent, a qualified creative activities therapist (CAT), and a qualified beautician and personal trainer.

There are regular visits from a variety of musicians, entertainers and community groups, and from a friendly pet cat and a house rabbit which our residents love to stroke.

For any resident not well enough to attend activities in the lounge, we make good use of our ‘jolly trolley’, decorating it for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries and paying personal visits with it to their rooms.

Family involvement: Family members and friends of our residents are always welcome to visit and to be involved with activities and outings by arrangement. We also welcome their participation in fundraising events such as fetes, pub quizzes and sponsored events.

Community links and outings: We have our own mini bus which enables us to take residents on regular outings to local pubs, coffee shops and the memory café, as well as going on shopping trips, visits to the seaside, local garden centres, the aquarium and other places of interest.

We have strong links the Marine Academy and with local primary schools whose pupils are always welcome visitors.

Location
