Butterfly Lodge carer takes on new dementia role

Michelle Fletcher, who has worked for Butterfly Lodge for 30 years, has taken on the role of Dementia Lead and is the first person to take on the newly created role.

Michelle started working for Butterfly Lodge at weekends when she was just 15 years old, helping with laundry, making beds for residents and serving teas and coffees. She has since gone on to become a Senior Healthcare Assistant at the home, and her role as Dementia Lead will help implement innovative and research-based practices such as creativity-based activities, animal therapy and nature-based care.

Drawing on her many years of experience working in the sector, Michelle will work to ensure Butterfly Lodge remains at the forefront of person-centred care. As part of the role, she’ll be taking on dementia leadership training, mentoring colleagues and delivering personalised activities to support resident wellbeing.

“As a teenager, I used to love helping out at the care home on weekends,” said Michelle. “When I turned 16 years old and I was offered the opportunity to train and become a full-time Health Care Assistant, I was so excited to start my caring career!

“I love my job and I’m deeply passionate about dementia care. For me, it’s all about helping people and being there for them in some of their most difficult times. It’s also about supporting family members. At Butterfly Lodge, it feels like we’re a family and our main goal is providing amazing care to our residents.”
