Spooky event boosts Avalon home comforts
Care staff from our Avalon Nursing Home recently hosted a Halloween bingo and raffle night at Blake Hall, to raise money for much-needed amenities for residents. The team raised £930 which will help pay for regular visits from a local hairdresser, and furnishings, lighting, and objects for their much-loved sensory room.
The event was attended by Avalon staff, residents, and family members as well as the public. Local businesses including The Compass Tavern showed their support for the fundraising drive by donating an array of prizes. The big winners of the night took away tickets to a local rock concert and a weekend away at Lakeside Caravan Park.
Olive Trowsdale, Activities Co-ordinator at Avalon Nursing Home, said: “Our Halloween bingo and raffle night was an enormous success, and we’re really pleased to have raised funds to help pay for important home-comforts for our residents.
“Getting a haircut may seem like an insignificant thing, but for our dementia residents it can be a way to maintain dignity and reconnect with identity. Getting a haircut is also a wonderful way to connect with others.
“Our sensory room at Avalon provides calm stimulation which helps improve mood and reduce anxiety, so it’s important we have all the necessary equipment in the room to support individual preferences. Whether that’s specific lighting, a white noise machine or different fabric textures, the items and objects in our sensory room help support our residents’ wellbeing.
“We’d like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the fantastic amount raised. This money will make a real difference to our residents’ day-to-day lives.”
Avalon also recently hosted its annual Halloween party, with residents getting involved with pumpkin carving and fancy dress. Alongside an array of spooky-themed activities, residents have also enjoyed a lively schedule of music sessions and baking classes. The home has also opened its doors to local school and nursery children, to continue fostering intergenerational connections.
